The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a conflict, mostly over territory. In 1948, after the Arab-Israeli War, the Holy Land was divided into the State of Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Many small wars have occurred, shifting ownership of territory minorly. In 1973, the Yom Kippur War occurred when Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel because Israel owned the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights, but in 1979, Egypt and Israel established a peace treaty.
In subsequent years, more attacks and violence among palestinians occurred and lead to the The first intifada, in 1987. This was a Palestinian uprising against Israel’s ownership of Gaza and the West Bank. The 1993 Oslo Accords calmed the conflict, by creating anew set-up, which allow Palestinians to govern themselves. In 2000, the second intifada began. It was way more violent than the first. Violence continued between Israelis and Palestinians, Palestine announced it would not be bound by the Oslo Accords anymore. By 2013, the United States tried to restore peace between Palestinian Authority and Israeli government, but the Palestinian Authority’s ruling party, Fatah formed a shared government with Hamas, a “Palestinian Sunni-Islamist fundamentalist organization,” which once rivaled Fatah.
In 2014, more waves of violence have broken out, which lead to military confrontations between Israeli and Hamas, firing three thousand rockets at Israel. This ended in August of 2014, with a cease-fire deal.
Since Donald Trump took office, he has claimed to make the Israeli-Palestinian conflict a priority, but hasn't proposed any ideas for long-term peace. He has moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, which the Israeli leadership has supported, because they believe that the “complete and united Jerusalem” is their capital, but Palestinian leadership disapproved, because they consider want East Jerusalem to be the capital for their future state. There are currently concerns of a third intifada and larger scale violence occurring. and the U.S. wants to protect its ally, Israel and want to help create a deal between Israeli and Palestinian territories.
