Peace in Canada
Peace is not something unknown to Canada, as it was ranked the 8th most peaceful country in the world in 2011. This ranking was done by the Institute for Economics and Peace, an international group that researched levels of peace among countries. They are ranked number 12 in the human development index. With just 1.7 homicides out of 100,000 and a .926 human development index, it is not surprising that they would be a more peaceful country. They also only spend 1.2% of their GDP on their military budget. These are some of the factors as to why Canada is a peaceful country, but something really interesting I found was the Canadian Peace Initiative.
The Canadian Peace Initiative is trying to establish a Department of Peace in Canada. The goal of the Department of Peace would be to form a new infrastructure that would create a culture of peace and non-violence. This wouldn't only be in Canada, but also throughout the entire globe. This kind of initiative has been successful already in four other countries; Costa Rice, Papa New Guinea, Nepal and The Solomon Islands. The Canadian Peace Initiative already has a bill they are trying to propose; Bill C-373. This bill would tackle local problems in Canada like trying to come to good terms with Canada's indigenous people. Yet, it would also go after international issues, like trying to abolish the potential use of nuclear weapons.
Canada is a major power in our modern world, but they are also conscious of how important peace is. They are doing a good job at keeping peace in their own home, but they are trying to increase their military budget for foreign affairs. I think it will be interesting to see how peace changes for better or worse in Canada in the coming years.
