21 Savage in ICE Custody

American(?) rapper, 21 Savage, was taken into Custody by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in Atlanta on February 3, for allegedly being illegally present in the United States. ICE spokesperson Bryan Cox stated that 21 Savage, Shayaabin Abraham-Joseph, is a citizen of the United Kingdom and overstayed his non-resident visa in 2005, when he was a minor. These allegations against the rapper are quite serious for a number of reasons and the current situation with ICE isn't adding up for a number of reasons, and the general public should think critically about the information the ICE is broadcasting.

Some points to consider:

1) 21 Savage was arrested for felony drug possession in 2014, and his immigration status was never questioned until February of 2019, when he was present during a targeted sting against another rapper.

2) 21 Savage has been in and out of the United States more than once since "overstaying his visa"

3) All information ICE is broadcasting is aimed to destroy the rapper's public image. ICE spokesperson Bryan Cox said “His whole public persona is false. He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his visa.” Statements like the first sentence of this one have nothing to do with immigration status, and are aimed to tear down his credibility. His immigration status is not being investigated, but his image, and the image of other immigrants is being destroyed is as well.

4) If this is a wrongful detention by ICE, it wouldn't be the first time. About 1,500 people have been wrongfully detained by ICE since 2012. Read more here.

***Disclaimer: I have no particular connection or affinity toward rapper, 21 Savage, I just think some things aren't quite adding up. ***
