Canada’s Immigration Policy
By Jadyn Cleary
Canada is one of the most successful countries when it comes to immigration. This is because it allows for just enough immigrants to come in to help their economy, while also limiting the influx enough so that the majority of Canadians support immigration. Canada accepts immigrants based on their economic and educational merit, not their race. This merit-based system allows for the citizens of Canada to feel good about whom they are letting into the country. Canada continues to increase the number of immigrants they let into the country each year without any signs of stopping or any need to. Most Canadians see immigration as a very good thing that is helping their economy. They even see it as one of their most positive features.

When looking at Canada's immigration policy from an American perspective, you can not simply place it into a conservative or liberal box. Instead, it is a mixture of both of these viewpoints. While Canada does allow many immigrants to come into the country, it's merit-based system places a great restriction on who is allowed into the country. As mentioned earlier, only the most qualified people get accepted into the country. This would provide a compromise in America to appeal to both political groups. President Trump has already stated that America's immigration policy should be more similar to Canada's. However, when thinking of Canada's policy, we must keep in mind that Canada's immigration policy does not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, or religion. Without implementing this portion of the policy in America as well, we can not hope to have a system as strong as Canada's.
