Immigration's Effect on Immigrant Children's Health Care

The ongoing issues around immigration have caused many immigrant families to refrain from being involved in government services, including health care. One of the reasons for this is something called "public charge." This assesses how many government services a permanent resident applicant is applying for, giving the government an idea of how much they will spend on this person. Since this is a factor in the decision of who gets status, immigrants are cutting down their use of government services. By doing so, they don't seem financially demanding of federal money, which could lead to a better chance of them being approved. Since families have decided against using many government funded services, this creates a large impact on immigrant children. Specifically in Texas, researchers say this is a key reason to why the numbers of children without healthcare are increasing. A study from the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute found 1 in 5 uninsured children living in the United States live in Texas. A that a large portion of these uninsured immigrant children living in Texas are Latino. The study shows that the percentage of uninsured children increased in 2017, during the first year of Donald Trump's presidency. The percentage in Texas rose to 10.7 percent from 9.8 percent the year before. Joan Alker, the writer of the Georgetown study said the increasing numbers of uninsured people is mainly caused by Trump's attempts towards immigration. "There is likely a heightened fear of interacting with the government, and this may be deterring them from signing up their eligible children for government-sponsored healthcare," said Alker. These decisions about government services and health care stem from immigrants continuing fear of the Trump Administration. Cheasty Anderson, a senior policy associate with the Children's Defense Fund in Texas said that from these heightened fears and lack of insured children, it falls hardest on the children with disabilities who need services.
